Shouting at Each Other
If believers can't prove anything is true, and skeptics can't prove anything isn't, and in the end we each just believe whatever makes most sense to us personally, then why are we blogging?
I think most of us, myself included, are just blogging to the choir.
On the rare occasion that someone drops in with a fundamental disagreement on one of my comment pages, they've just stumbled in and they'll never come back.
Good question. Sometimes I begin to feel the "futility" of this kind of dialogue, but why does anyone write anything?
The truth is that writing is a therapeutic act for the writer himself. Sometimes its for venting emotions, sometimes its a way to work out in one's own head how to think or feel about something. Sometimes its a way to validate one's own thinking by seeing that others feel the same way.
Personally I find that the writing impulse is cyclical and depends on my state of mind. When the impulse is present it is almost irresistable.
What does the Jewish neo philosopher mean by victory of people like him over people like you ? I was in Crown Heights last week. Plenty of Lubabs there who will be lighting candles. Lubabs are doing wonderful things, whatever they might believe or is in their hearts. So Jeish non philosopher why denigrate fellow Jews. It;s a time for simchas, be happy and share in joy with all fellow Jews........Avi

And a Merry Christmas to you.

I don't accept your premises here. Although nobody can prove anything in any absoute way, the evidence certianly can only lead you in one direction.
There is also the disscusion of, accepting a rational universe, which position is the more rational.
Meaning, even accepting your premise, even if one can't prove one way or another, you certainly can discuss which position makes more sense to accept.
Oh, and Happy Chanukah!
Good question.

Lub, before you get too happy about Hanukah, remember that it primarily celebrates the victory of people like me over people like you.
I think that philosophical writings do have a big impact on certain people, especially teenagers who are undecided and who may be reading our blogs.
