I tend to approach religion and faith from a non-scholarly point of view. Call me (very) old fashioned by I like to reason it out using my wits and my senses. There are a couple reasons for this. More often than not my focus is on belief in god and not belief in Torah. Trying to prove god by way of the Torah is a circular argument so I stay away from that approach. I also don't believe Torah comes from a divine source so I get dismissive of the text and don't find inspiration in dissecting the stories. For example, I read that God tells Abraham to sacrifice his son, and I raise one quizzical eyebrow and think to myself "Nothing for me here."
But just because I'm quick to dismiss doesn't mean the arguments aren't interesting. So to round out this blog I have added a contributor who will approach the issues of God, Torah and religion from a scholarly perspective. Starting this Friday The Candy Man will make his first weekly post. The Candy Man is smart, funny and idealistic. He's also a good friend. I look forward to reading his stuff.
Sammy Davis Jr.'s The Candy Man
I apologize for the use Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka. [clops al cheit] Unfortunately, I was unable to find a video using both Gene Wilder and SDJ's vocals. :(

I thought I was the Candy Man! I make a lot of sweet little comments.
Sorry JP. It turns out you're the creepy guy in the back of the shul. :P
A few weeks ago you wrote.
"I firmly believe in the Golden Rule. "Treat others the way you want to be treated." I try to live my life based on this principal."
You're doing a fantastic job. Of being a total fake.
And I assume you'll delete this comment too, as you generally do when something bothers you.
JP I guess you either missed the emoticon or you have no sense of humor. Your loss.
Did you know :-P means "sticking out your tongue"? I don't know what I lost.
Is the Candy Man running on the pro G-d ticket or the against ticket?
Nemo,
Good question... I'm sure The Candy Man could go either way but I'll let him and his work speak for itself.
Helen Lyle is a graduate student conducting research for her thesis on urban legends. While interviewing freshmen about their superstitions, she hears about a local legend known as Candyman, the son of a slave who was brutally tortured and murdered. According to the legend, anyone who looks into a mirror and chants his name five times will summon him, but at the cost of his or her own life. Thinking this is just the new spin she has been looking for, Helen enters the notorious gang-ridden territory known as the Cabrini-Green housing projects (the site of a brutal murder). Helen believes that Candyman cannot exist, but when she calls him into our world a string of murders begins and the police look to her as the primary suspect. Now, only one person can set her free: the Candyman.
OK Lubab I am pretty sure that your problems with your " aishes chayil." can be worked out. I too dont believe in "tms " and my very frum wife ( who believes in everything that the rabbonim say ) knows how I feel. But we have managed to work out our differences. You can also. Hang in their buddy. Avi
Hey Lubab forget the candy man. I can offer more entertainment for your readers. The Jewish Non Philosopher has challanged me to a debate. My very little brain against his super powered brain that does not work very well. Anytime that you are ready JP. ...........AVI

Rabban Gamliel. Anyone can join in and take sides. Especially if you are as wise as the original Rabban Gamliel. So far JP has been ignoring me. Maybe running scared........ AVI

Well I imagine with his intellegence it is more a matter of running from the legacy of his tongue as opposed to his evidence. He's pretty formidible but gratuitously hits below the belt. Ok Avi lets have a friendly war. I remember when I jokingly said to Baal HaBos something like or maybe exactly like "This is war!" He took me seriously. Ooh that hurt coming from the Baal.
I have posted on JP's blogs, and have accused him of many logical short comings. But to gratuitously attack someone and call him "creepy" is below the belt.
As skeptics and men and women of reason, we could do better!
BadRabbi,
> But to gratuitously attack someone and call him "creepy" is below the belt.
Gratuitously attack? Really? It was just some good-natured ribbing. OK, maybe just semi-good-natured but, ribbing nonetheless.
BR and LNM
The more I read his remarks and his blog, the more I am convinced that JP is a dangerously sick person (besides irrational). Creepy is charitable.
