That's One Gay Huppa!

(Guest post by the CandyMan)

I feel pretty lucky to live near San Francisco, which features a fun and renewalist Jewish community. So today I went on a little reconnaissance mission for the blog. Here are some pics from the steps of City Hall, where folks were celebrating (or protesting) the first state-recognized gay marriages in California.

Statuesque San Francisco City Hall

Move over, newlyweds. PJA's huppa is taking center stage.

I liked this shot of the crowd, the huppa, and the flag.

We all signed the ketuba.

Free samplers from that most liberal of ice creams, Ben and Jerry's.

The lone voice of reason?

I saw no candmyman on the ktuba.

Now would two gay men even need a ktuba?

San Francisco: Where the headgear mingle.

Where else can you find such an assortment of headgear under ONE chuppa? There's a Purim clown hat, a black yarmulke, a blue-and-white knitted kippah, a head covered with frizzy white hair, and one with a Jesus Is Life helmet. What a chuppa!

WHAT ABOUT Sheva Bracot or a GET. Have these issues been raised yet.

Heh. Should have signed "Candyman", you're right.

Good eye! We Jews do love our headgear. Although I think the Jesus Is Life helmet was probably a protestor from Kansas.

Same reason as everyone else. Decoration.

Well my brother claims that gay marriage will only truly gain acceptance when the American people witness a high-profile gay divorce. Preferably between two celebrities.

Well no. I mean, does the text of the ktuba change if two men are marring?

Only if they're Conservative.

I am not so thrilled about this.

Don't worry, JP, I think Khalid Sheikh Mohammed agrees with you.

That chuppah wasn't quite gay enough for me. I thought it would be more colorful. Congratulations to newlyweds though.

The fact of the matter is that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, all three, are pretty alike on same-sex relations. DON'T DO THEM.

If the secular government wants to legalize it, whatever. This is the same government that violates the constitution whenever it suits them so they have precious little moral authority much less lack of hypocrisy on rights and wouldn't know right from wrong if it sat on their lap and called them daddy.

However, the arguments inside religious movements are far from over and it is just gratuitous grandstanding to pull this in what appears to me to be an attempt at seizing the public and portraying that Judaism is largely accepting of gay marriage when it isn't, and thus making those who disagree look like a fringe bunch when they are far from it.

Not right for Judaism, Islam, Christianity. Let the secular world do what it wants. If your sect/movement/denomination wants to come out and support it, fine, make it explicit which one is saying so.

is just a joke article at the Onion, but make no mistake, it is precisely this kind of shove fringe sexuality in the face of anyone you can to get a shock and get attention attitude of the gay movements that is making their acceptance infinitely harder. There's a reason the gayest of old time townies in Provincetown, MA keep quiet, to themselves, and away from the rainbow brigades who flounce around the main drag every summer. They're embarrassing and unsightly and for no more reason than to get attention because they're insecure, juvenile, and immature.

If straights pulled in public some of the things that I've seen gays do in PTown, they'd be arrested in 10 seconds flat for public indecency. Gay? PC to let them do what no one else gets away with. When the movement grows up, then let them say how they're deserving.

@SDR,
Are you gay?

No.

Suitepotato,

I agree with you that the debate over gay marriage is far from over, and will certainly continue for quite some time.

However, I think your comments about gay behavior lack perspective and empathy. The behaviors of which you speak are fringe and even that is tongue-in-cheek. Gay pride is like black pride. It's a reaction to a history of oppression and social disapproval... a history in which, sadly, religion has done far more harm than good.

You're on there, just scroll down a little more. The other day you said you were seriously considering signing off so I moved you to where it won't show when your last post was.

AIDS has probably killed about 10,000 times more people than he has.
